Richard Balfry set up the company New Equine Wear in 1995, when his wife's mare received a serious tendon injury. There was nothing available on the market that appeared to offer good  protection and was lightweight, waterproof and basically bombproof enough!  Richard thought he could do better so he created the first N.E.W X-Country boot which was launched on the market at BETA International in1996.

An important point is that New Equine Wear is a British company manufacturing it's own products in the UK. This means that the company employs local people which benefits the local economy. The employers enjoy fair wages, and good working conditions.  This also means that manufacturing items in the UK have a greener effect than importing goods, as the uk factories create less pollution and therefore also do not need to ship products all over the world.
